Tips for Visiting the Great Wall in Winter!

Visiting the Great Wall during winter can be quite the experience—don’t underestimate how cold it can get! I visited in mid-December after a snowfall, and the wind was biting cold—it really stung my face!

The Great Wall isn’t overly challenging to hike; just take it slow if you need to. I took the northern route, which has two main sections: north and south. I only went up to the North Tower Nine before heading back (the farthest point is the North Tower Twelve).

We opted not to take a car or bus, relying instead on the subway and high-speed train, which were quite convenient. Just remember to book your return train tickets a few days in advance since they can sell out.

🎫 Tickets: Off-season ticket price: ¥35 (available on the “八达岭长城” mini-program). 🚡 Cable Car: ¥100 one-way, ¥140 round trip. 🚇 Transportation: Take the high-speed train from Qinghe or Beijing North to Badaling Great Wall Station. ⏱️ Time: Allocate around 3 hours for the northern route round trip, and allow extra time for your return train.

📌 Winter Travel Tips:

  • Timing: Start your hike around noon when it’s slightly warmer.
  • Food: You can bring snacks or eat at the base—there are noodles, rice dishes, and even KFC (though it’s a bit pricey).
  • Warm Drinks: Bring a thermos of hot water for a cozy boost along the way.
  • Route Choice: The northern route is steeper, so it’s great for younger, more energetic travelers. The southern route is flatter and may be better suited for older visitors or children.
  • Cats on the Route: Look out for a few well-fed cats along the northern route—they’re adorable!

Lastly, I didn’t make it to the “Not a true hero until you’ve climbed the Great Wall” stone tablet, so I’ll save that for next time!
