I Prefer This Ancient Huizhou City Over Hongcun

A line by Tang Xianzu, “In a lifetime of infatuation, never in a dream have I reached Huizhou.”
I don’t know how many people are haunted by it and yearn for it.
But as one of the four ancient cities,
The presence of Huizhou Ancient City seems a bit weak.
Its charm seems to be overshadowed by attractions such as Mount Huangshan, Hongcun, and Xidi.

If you ask me:
Where are the worthy places to visit in Huizhou Ancient City?
My answer is: The essence of the ancient city is hidden in the alleys! Dou Shan Street, Xin Nan Street, Zhong Shan Alley, Cross Street… Only by understanding these ancient streets and alleys can one understand the beauty of the ancient city. The white walls and black tiles on a rainy day have a unique charm.
As an ordinary tourist, you may be a bit disappointed with the main road! It is more like a pedestrian street for locals, full of practical shops such as grain and oil groceries, clothing and food. The atmosphere of life in the old county town is overwhelming.

⭕️Tour route
Huizhou History Museum – South Que Tower – Huizhou Prefectural Yamen – Ancient city wall – Xu Guo Stone Archway – Huizhou Garden – Dou Shan Street – Yuliang Ancient Town (Yuliang Street, Yuliang Dam).
⭕️Key check-in places
1️⃣Huizhou History Museum
There is a two-story museum on the right side when entering the ancient city. It provides a detailed introduction to the history of Huizhou. Visiting the museum first and then strolling through the ancient city will give you a stronger sense of immersion.
2️⃣Huizhou Prefectural Yamen
The Huizhou Prefectural Yamen was built in the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty. During the Yining period of the Sui Dynasty (617…
3️⃣Xu Guo Stone Archway
Also known as the Grand Scholar Archway. Standing in the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, it is the only octagonal archway in China and is known as the “Triumphal Arch of the East.”
4️⃣Huizhou Garden
To the north of the stone archway, Renhe Tower, ancient stage, Yudai Bridge, etc. are full of ancient charm. It is a good place for taking photos in Hanfu.
5️⃣Dou Shan Street
Those who are interested in Huizhou architecture must not miss this place. A 300-meter-long thousand-year-old street has the Huizhou-style Wang family residence, Yang family courtyard, ancient private school Xu family hall, Pan family courtyard, etc. It is the 聚居地 of ancient Huizhou merchants and is no less than a museum of Huizhou architecture.
6️⃣Zhong Shan Alley
This alley is the highest alley in Huizhou Ancient City. Going up the steps, you can reach the top of the mountain directly. Although the alley is not large, there are all deep mansions inside.
7️⃣Yuliang Street
With a history of more than 1,200 years, it is known as the “source of Huizhou merchants.” Yuliang Ancient Street is adjacent to mountains and rivers. The entire street is paved with uniform pebbles. Shops line both sides. Ancient ancestral halls, ancient residences, and ancient temples can be seen everywhere along the street.
⭕️Huizhou snacks
When it comes to Huizhou cuisine, you must definitely try the stinky mandarin fish and hairy tofu in “A Bite of China.” In addition, I also want to recommend stone Guo and Huangshan sesame seed cake.
