Obtaining a Chinese visa varies depending on the visa type and the destination of the visit in China. Except for foreigners who meet the conditions for visa-free entry, most foreigners need to apply for a Chinese visa at Chinese embassies and consulates abroad or Chinese visa application centers. Countries that meet relevant requirements can also apply for a Chinese landing visa or a Chinese transit visa exemption at specific entry ports upon arrival in China.
Applicants need to prepare their passports, supporting documents, and visa fees, and then follow several steps to apply for a Chinese visa. The application steps for regular visas such as Chinese tourist visas (L visas) and Chinese transit visas (G visas) are simple, while other visas such as Chinese work visas (Z visas), student visas (X visas), and family reunion visas (Q visas) have additional requirements. The following is a complete guide on how to apply for a Chinese visa.

I. Fill out the Chinese visa application form and make an online appointment for submission.

First, visit the official website of COVA, namely “China Online Visa Application”, at https://cova.mfa.gov.cn. After entering, select your preferred language and find your country in the “Region” category. This operation will redirect you to a new page where you can efficiently fill out the visa application form.
For citizens of countries such as the United States, they can fill out the application form directly on the COVA platform. On the other hand, applicants from countries such as Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and Australia need to fill out the visa application form on the website of the Chinese Visa Application Service Center at www.visaforchina.cn.
After completing the application, please check if an appointment is required for on-site submission at the visa office of the Chinese embassy or consulate. Although many embassies and consulates currently allow submissions without an appointment, it is crucial to stay updated by visiting the website of the relevant embassy or consulate where you plan to submit your documents.
Important note: Visa applicants should fill out the application form truthfully, accurately, and completely, including personal information (name, date and place of birth, gender, marital status, nationality, and passport), visa type, work, education, family, email, past trips to China, etc. Once the visa form is submitted online, no information on the form can be changed. If any adjustments are needed, the entire form must be filled out again.
After filling out the application form as required, be sure to print the complete set of COVA forms and sign on the confirmation page and other required pages. If the COVA forms are not prepared as required, the application will not be accepted.
Warm reminder: Handwritten application forms are not accepted. If someone else fills it out on your behalf, please fill in the other person’s information.

V. Online application/landing application for Chinese visas

  1. Apply for Chinese visas online.
Currently, the entire process of handling Chinese visas cannot be fully streamlined. Applicants or their agents can fill out forms and make appointments online, but they need to personally submit visa application materials to Chinese embassies, consulates abroad or visa centers. Fingerprinting may be required if necessary.
  1. Apply for a Chinese landing visa – port visa.
For some applicants, obtaining a Chinese visa at the port of entry takes less time and the procedures are simpler. There are four situations that meet the VOA application conditions: approved emergency entry, group tourism (currently unavailable), visiting special economic zones (currently unavailable) (Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Xiamen), and entering Hainan Province through certain ports (currently unavailable). You need to fill out a simple form, an entry card, pay the visa fee and undergo border inspection at the port of entry.
Tourists who obtain special economic tourism visas must enter and exit at specific ports and stay within specific cities. They cannot go to other cities unless they apply for a new Chinese visa. (The stay time in Shenzhen is 5 days, and the stay time in Xiamen and Zhuhai is 3 days. The stay time in Hainan is 30 days.)
Special note: Except for visa-free situations such as 24-hour/72-hour/144-hour transit visa exemptions, American and French citizens must apply for Chinese visas before entering China and cannot apply for Chinese landing visas.
