The Badaling section of the Great Wall offers a unique charm in autumn. Here are some tips for enjoying the fall season:

Peak Time for Autumn Foliage: From early October to early November, the Great Wall at Badaling is at its best for autumn leaf viewing, making it an ideal time for photos.

Top Spots for Viewing Autumn Leaves:

  • Largest Chinese Tallow Tree in the Badaling Great Wall Scenic Area: This tree, known as the “King of Red Leaves,” is located inside the courtyard of South Tower 1. It forms a perfect scene with the north cityscape and part of South Tower 1’s wall.
  • Best Arrow Window for Autumn Views: Located on the west side of South Tower 2, this spot offers a golden view of the forest below, particularly of the beautiful yellow-gold Yuanbao Maple trees, which resemble a treasury of gold. The Chinese Tallow trees are especially eye-catching here, with bright red leaves like a brilliant sunset.
  • Most Scenic Wall Section for Autumn Leaves: Between North Towers 10 and 11, the red leaves inside the wall, mostly Yuanbao Maple trees, blend beautifully with the wall’s geometric lines, creating a breathtaking panorama of red leaves against the rugged wall.
  • Best Area to Walk Through Autumn Foliage: Located on the path below North Tower 4, this 1.2-kilometer path lets you stroll through the forest and enjoy the contrast between the red leaves and the Great Wall up close. With North Tower as a foreground and South Tower as the background, this area offers stunning views at every angle.

Suggested Routes for Autumn Foliage Viewing:

  • Easy and Relaxed: From the main entrance at the pass (turn left) – South Tower 1 courtyard for the largest red leaf tree – South Tower 2 for the best arrow window views – return along the same path. This route covers 300 meters with an elevation gain of 28 meters and takes about 30 minutes.
  • Scenic Walk: From the main entrance at the pass (turn right) – West Platform – Path below North Tower 1 – Path below North Tower 4 through the most beautiful forest of red leaves – back along the wall – exit at the main entrance. This route spans 1,680 meters with an elevation gain of 135 meters, taking approximately 1.5 hours.
  • Overhead Ride with a View: Take the northern Badaling Great Wall cable car directly to North Tower 8, also known as the “Hero Slope,” for stunning views of the mountain covered in autumn colors. This route lets you stroll through the forest, getting up close to the autumn leaves and experiencing the contrast between the vibrant leaves and the ancient wall.
  • Off the Beaten Path: Walk from the Bear Park entrance – Wall between North Towers 11 and 10, the most scenic area for autumn leaves – return along the same path. This route is 300 meters long with an elevation gain of 80 meters and takes about 45 minutes.

Important Tips:

  • Book in Advance: During peak travel season, it’s best to book tickets in advance to avoid long waits.
  • Check the Weather: Autumn weather can be unpredictable, so check the forecast and prepare accordingly.
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: The Great Wall paths can be uneven, so wear comfortable shoes for easier walking.
  • Protect the Environment: Don’t litter while exploring the Great Wall.
  • Stay Safe: Follow safety guidelines and avoid areas that are not open to the public.
