A hundred miles of river waters are like a painting. The landscape of the Li River is truly a peerless wonder. Here is one of the most beautiful karst landscapes in China, a treasure of China’s magnificent mountains and rivers, and also the essence of Guilin’s scenery. There are magnificent landscapes such as green mountains and clear waters, strange caves and unique rocks, beautiful islands, precipitous shoals, deep pools, and flying waterfalls and flowing springs. The Li River presents different charms in different weather conditions.
1,Origin of the Name “Li River”
The “Li River” has historically been one of the most important rivers in Guangxi Province and a major waterway in southern China. Since the Qin and Han Dynasties, this river has been called various names, including Li Shui, Shian River, Gui River, and Fu River. Among these, “Li River” has become the most well-known name, and its origin remains an intriguing topic of historical interest.
“Xiang and Li Rivers Share the Same Source”: A Mainstream View
The Li River was initially known as “Li Shui.” In the autumn of 112 BCE, during the Yuan Ding reign, Emperor Wu of Han sent troops to suppress the Southern Yue. One military route led through modern-day Guilin, moving south along the Li River towards Cangwu (present-day Wuzhou), where it joined three other forces in the vicinity of Panyu (modern Guangzhou).
During the Qin and Han Dynasties, the central Chinese knowledge of the Lingnan region’s geography was heavily influenced by the transportation networks of the time. The successful excavation of the Ling Canal in the Qin Dynasty altered both the water system of Guangxi and the river names. Emperor Qin Shi Huang appointed regional governor Tu Sui to command “the navy soldiers” to attack Baiyue tribes and tasked Governor Shi Lu with excavating a canal. Shi Lu harnessed the natural waterways beneath Yuecheng Mountain to create the Ling Canal, an artificial waterway connecting China’s north to its south. This allowed Qin troops to receive timely supplies and reinforcements, ultimately leading to the conquest of the Western Ou tribes and the unification of Lingnan into China.
Because the Ling Canal linked the Xiang and Li Rivers, people began to consider them as having a common source, both originating from Haiyang Mountain in the southeast of Lingchuan County, Guilin. The Xiang River flows north via the Ling Canal, merging with the Yangtze, while the Li River flows westward, joining the Xijiang River. The Book of Han, written by the Eastern Han historian Ban Gu, was the first work to clearly record the relationship between the Xiang and Li Rivers in the Lingling Commandery:
“Haiyang Mountain is the source of the Xiang River, which flows northward to Lingling and joins the Yangtze after passing through two commanderies over 2,530 miles. There is also the Li River, which flows southeast to Guǎngxìn and merges with the Yulin, covering 980 miles.”
Based on these records, the Northern Wei geographer Li Daoyuan first proposed the “Xiang and Li Rivers Share the Same Source” theory in his work Commentary on the Water Classic. For a long period afterward, this theory became widely accepted. This ancient “Li River,” stretching nearly a thousand miles, was thought to originate from Haiyang Mountain and follow the Ling Canal, flowing westward to merge with the Daxiong River at Xing’an County, before finally reaching the West River near Wuzhou.
2,Six Ways to Play the Li River
Located in Guilin, the Li River stretches 164 kilometers and is recognized by CNN as one of the most beautiful rivers in the world, with the Li River being the only Chinese river to make the list. Although the river is long, the primary sightseeing section for visitors runs from Mopanshan Pier in Guilin to Yangshuo Pier, offering a variety of ways to experience it: large cruise on the main Li River, bamboo rafting, Xingping boat cruise on the smaller Li River, hiking, cycling, and mountain-top viewpoints.
Option 1: Large Li River Cruise
The large Li River cruise is available on three-star and four-star boats, both offering the same scenic route, though departing from different piers. The journey typically takes about four hours, with prices varying based on the boat rating. The higher the star rating, the higher the ticket price. Meals also differ: three-star boats offer basic in-flight-style meals included in the ticket, so it’s recommended to bring snacks if needed. Four-star boats, however, provide a buffet lunch with a full selection of meats, main dishes, fruits, and drinks.
The large Li River cruise is named as such because it covers the five major scenic highlights along the river: Yangdi Misty Rain, Langshi Wonderland, Nine Horse Fresco Hill, Yellow Cloth Reflection, and the Xingping Scenic Area. Among these, the Yellow Cloth Reflection scene is the iconic image featured on the 20-yuan bill. The three-star cruise typically departs from Mopanshan Pier and ends at Yangshuo Pier, while the four-star cruise pier locations may vary.
Tips:
- Year-Round Availability: The large Li River cruise is available year-round, though lower water levels during the dry season may impact accessibility, so check in advance.
- Departure Time: Three-star and four-star cruises generally depart between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Arrive early, especially during peak season, to allow time for potential traffic, ticket queues, and boarding.
- Transportation from Yangshuo Pier: Yangshuo Pier is a bit far from Yangshuo town and most hotels. When buying your ticket, check if an electric car ticket is included or consider purchasing one in advance to avoid walking the distance.
Option 2: Bamboo Rafting on the Li River
Bamboo rafting is divided into two options: bamboo rafting on the main Li River and bamboo rafting on the smaller Li River. The main Li River route runs from Yangdi Pier to Xingping Pier, while the smaller Li River offers multiple routes, such as Yangdi Pier to Nine Horse Fresco Hill Pier (one-way 50 minutes, round trip 1.5 hours), Nine Horse Fresco Hill to Xingping Pier, or a round trip from Chaobanshan Pier in Xingping (around 45 minutes).
For a photo opportunity with the Yellow Cloth Reflection scene on the 20-yuan bill, choose the Xingping section, which is the most convenient for this landmark. Alternatively, disembark from a raft at Nine Horse Fresco Hill Pier and take an electric car to Xingping for the view.
If you’re exploring the Xingping section by bamboo raft, consider allowing time to wander around the ancient town of Xingping. This riverside town, with thousands of years of cultural history, is an ideal spot to try some local snacks, stroll through traditional streets, and capture scenic photos.
Tips:
- Rafting Hours at Yangdi Pier: Operating hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Outside these hours, bamboo rafting may be unavailable due to large boat traffic or temporary restrictions.
- Getting to Chaobanshan Pier: The round-trip raft route at Chaobanshan Pier departs here, which is about 1.8 km from Xingping Ancient Town. You can take an electric car from Xingping town to the pier or walk, though walking is not recommended during peak season due to crowds.
Additional Tips for Bamboo Rafting:
- Seasonal Limitations: During the rainy season, high water levels on the Li River may prevent bamboo rafts from operating due to maritime restrictions, so be sure to check in advance. Rafting during winter or early spring can be quite chilly, so dress warmly.
Option 3: Small Li River Cruise from Xingping
Another way to explore the smaller Li River is by taking a small boat cruise from Xingping, which lasts around 90 minutes. The route from Xingping to Fishing Village provides an excellent view of the iconic Yellow Cloth Reflection, depicted on the 20-yuan note.
Tips:
- Boat Size: Xingping boats are smaller, with only a single passenger level. If you prefer a larger boat with more comfort, consider the three- or four-star large Li River cruises.
Option 4: Hiking Along the Li River
For hiking enthusiasts, a scenic red trail runs along the banks of the Li River. Covering the entire distance by foot from Mopanshan Pier in Guilin to Yangshuo Pier would be challenging in one day, as the boat journey alone takes about four hours. Most hikers choose to start from Yangdi Pier, hiking to Nine Horse Fresco Hill, and depending on time, continue to Xingping or switch to an electric car to reach Xingping.
Once in Xingping, you can decide to stay overnight or take a bus to Yangshuo for further exploration.
Tips:
- Overnight in Xingping: If time allows, spend a night in Xingping and continue to Yangshuo the next day.
- Sun Protection and Hydration: Bring plenty of water and sun protection, and consider carrying medicine to prevent heatstroke.
- Local Guide for Safety: Hiking with a knowledgeable local guide familiar with the trails ensures safety along this beautiful but potentially challenging route.
Option 5: Cycling Along the Li River
Cycling along the eastern bank of the Li River is another immersive way to explore the landscape. Start near Mopanshan Pier or the ancient town of Daxu, following the riverside path through quaint villages and fields until you reach Daxu Ancient Town—an ideal spot to take a break and enjoy a meal.
Tips:
- Bicycle Rentals in Daxu: Many bike rental options are available around Daxu Ancient Town, allowing for easy rentals based on your needs.
- Shared Roads: The red bike path along the eastern bank isn’t continuous along the river. In some places, it merges with narrow roads shared with cars and motorbikes, so ride carefully, and ideally go with someone familiar with the route.
Option 6: Panoramic Views from Mountain Tops
Several mountains offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Li River. Among these, Xianggong Mountain in Xingping Town, Yangshuo is highly recommended for both its beauty and accessibility. Most visitors reach the mountain base by private car or tour group, then hike up the steps to the summit for an incredible view of the winding river below.
Tips:
- Sunrise and Cloud Views: Early risers may be rewarded with stunning views of the sunrise or a sea of clouds over the river, depending on the weather.
- Footwear and Safety: The path up Xianggong Mountain consists of steps, but they can be slippery in rainy weather. Wear comfortable shoes with a good grip to ensure a safe climb.
