Mount Emei

Mount Emei

I. Introduction to Mount Emei

Mount Emei is located near the mysterious 30° north latitude. It stands on the southwestern edge of the Sichuan Basin within Emeishan City, Leshan City, Sichuan Province. It is the general name for Mount Da’e, Mount Er’e, and Mount San’e. The terrain is steep and the scenery is beautiful. It is known as “Emei is the most beautiful under heaven”. The highest peak, Wanfo Summit, is 3099 meters above sea level, and the main peak, Golden Summit, is 3079 meters above sea level, more than 2700 meters higher than the Emei Plain. Mount Emei has the characteristics of “majesty, beauty, strangeness, danger, and serenity”. It is famous for its beautiful natural scenery, long-standing Buddhist culture, rich animal and plant resources, and unique geological landforms. It is known as the “fairy mountain and Buddhist kingdom”, “plant kingdom”, “animal paradise”, and “geological museum”. The great poet Li Bai of the Tang Dynasty had the eternal chant of “Sichuan has many fairy mountains, and Emei is matchless”. It also has the laudatory names of “a single mountain outshines all others” and “surpassing the five sacred mountains”. Mount Emei is beautiful throughout the land. The mountain is majestic, the scenery is beautiful, and the meteorology is magnificent. There is a wonderful metaphor of “there are four seasons on one mountain, and the scenery is different every ten li”. The poet Tan Zhongyue of the Qing Dynasty summarized the beautiful scenery of Mount Emei into ten scenes: “Auspicious light on the Golden Summit”, “Moonlit night at Elephant Pool”, “Immortal Mansion of Nine Elders”, “Dawn rain at Hongchun”, “Autumn wind at Baishui”, “Twin bridges and clear sounds”, “Snowy scene at Daping”, “Overlapping greenery at Lingyan”, “Clear clouds at Luofeng”, and “Evening bell at Shengji”. Mount Emei has a long history and a strong Buddhist atmosphere. As the sacred place of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, it mainly worships Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. It is the place where Samantabhadra Bodhisattva appears and preaches the scriptures. There are about 26 existing temples. The important ones are the eight major temples (Baoguo Temple, Fuhu Temple, Qingyin Pavilion, Wannian Temple, Hongchunping, Xianfeng Temple, Xixiangchi, Huazang Temple). Buddhist activities are frequent. Together with Mount Wutai in Shanxi Province, Mount Jiuhua in Anhui Province, and Mount Putuo in Zhejiang Province, it is called one of the four famous Buddhist mountains in China. The main scenic spots in Mount Emei Scenic Area are: Wanfo Summit, Golden Buddha on the Golden Summit, Jieyin Hall, Xixiangchi, Xianfeng Temple, Ninety-Nine Turns, Wannian Temple, Qingyin Pavilion, Baoguo Temple, Fuhu Temple, Dafo Chan Temple, etc. In addition, the macaques on Mount Emei are also a major attraction. In recent years, due to various reasons, the monkeys have “exchanged martial arts” with tourists, making the monkeys on Mount Emei known to the public. However, be careful when encountering them.

II. Introduction to the Scenic Spots of Mount Emei

Wanfo Summit

Wanfo Summit

Wanfo Summit is the scenic area and natural ecological reserve with the highest altitude among the four famous Buddhist mountains in China. It is also the world natural and cultural heritage site with the highest altitude in China. Wanfo Summit is 3099 meters above sea level. There was originally a temple on the top called Wenshu Nunnery, also known as Qingliang Nunnery and Jile Hall. It was built in the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty and rebuilt in the 11th year of the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. A sutra collection building was built and thousands of volumes of scriptures were collected. Wanfo Summit, Qianfo Summit, and Golden Summit are arranged in a row. Looking up from the foot of the mountain, they look like a cicada’s head. The saying “cicada’s head, Emei Mountain” comes from this.

Golden Summit

Golden Summit

Golden Buddha

Golden Buddha

The Golden Buddha on the Golden Summit is a copper-cast and gold-plated Buddha statue. The total height is 48 meters and the total weight is 660 tons. It is composed of a pedestal and the Samantabhadra Bodhisattva in ten directions. Among them, the pedestal is 6 meters high, 27 meters long and wide on each side. Ten great vows of Samantabhadra are engraved on all sides. The exterior is decorated with granite reliefs. The Samantabhadra Bodhisattva in ten directions is 42 meters high and weighs 350 tons. It comes from “forty-eight vows to save all sentient beings” in Buddhist scriptures, which means the forty-eight great vows of Amitabha Buddha to save all sentient beings.

Jieyin Hall

Jieyin Hall

Jieyin Hall was formerly known as Xindian in the Song Dynasty. It is located at the foot of the big mountain at an altitude of 2540 meters. In the early Ming Dynasty, it was rebuilt into Jieyin Nunnery, also known as Chaoyang Pavilion. There are eight ancient scenic spots such as “Combing hair and leaving the moon”, “Immortal bed lying on clouds”, “Watching the light from the platform”, and “Evening glow of the divine lamp”. The architectural layout of Jieyin Hall faces west from the east. It is a courtyard layout with three halls, consisting of the front hall (Maitreya Hall), the middle hall (Mahavira Hall), and the back hall (Amitabha Hall). The main body of the building is an all-frame cement brick antique structure, with a Xieshan-style roof, glazed tile roof, plain brick platform base, and multiple steps of Ruyi treads. It is located on a three-level platform with a height difference of 25 meters before and after.

Xixiangchi

Xixiangchi

Xixiangchi, one of the eight major temples on Mount Emei, is located on Zuantianpo at an altitude of 2070 meters on Mount Emei. In the Ming Dynasty, it was only a pavilion called “Chuxiting”. Later, it was rebuilt into a nunnery named Chuxiannunnery. In 1699 AD (the 38th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty), it was rebuilt into a temple by Master Xingneng (also known as the old man Hongchuan). In the early years of the Qianlong reign (1736 AD), Master Yuezheng renovated the Zuantianpo in front of the temple and the Luohanpo behind the temple, and rebuilt the small pool in front of the temple into a hexagonal shape. A stone elephant was placed by the pool to correspond to the legend of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva washing the elephant. According to legend, when Samantabhadra Bodhisattva passed by on an elephant, the white elephant once bathed in the pool. Therefore, it was renamed Xixiangchi and also known as Tianhua Chan Temple. Xixiangchi has Maitreya Hall, Mahavira Hall, Guanyin Hall, as well as a sutra collection building, guest quarters, etc.

Ninety-Nine Turns

Ninety-Nine Turns

The Ninety-Nine Turns is a famous dangerous slope on Mount Emei. It starts from Lingxiao Pavilion and ends at Shouxing Bridge. One turn follows another, one slope connects another. When looking at one slope to the end, suddenly the path winds around and there is another slope. Legend has it that when Samantabhadra came to Mount Emei to build a Buddhist site at the beginning, when passing by here, seeing the high and steep mountains, steep slopes and slippery stones, and extremely dangerous terrain, he instructed Lingzu Bodhisattva to command three thousand powerful men accompanying him to start working at the same time, and each person built a step. Three thousand stone steps were completed in an instant. When Lingzu checked and counted, there were exactly ninety-nine turns on the stone steps. Therefore, this slope got its name.

Baoguo Temple

Baoguo Temple

Baoguo Temple is located at the foot of Mount Emei, at an altitude of 551 meters. It is the first temple on Mount Emei. It is also the location of the Mount Emei Buddhist Association and the center of Buddhist activities on Mount Emei. The large plaque “Baoguo Temple” on the mountain gate is inscribed by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty and written by Yu Fan. There is a plaque “Solemn Appearance” hanging in the main hall. On the pillars on both sides of the mountain gate are the couplets “The phoenix spreads its wings towards the golden palace, and the bells and chimes are frequently heard falling on the jade steps.” The horizontal plaque is “Illuminating the Buddhist Forest” and “Emitting Brilliant Light”. There is a couplet on the gate: “Contemplate the Dao alone, and expound the scriptures while sitting.”

The boundary between the high-altitude area and the middle and low-altitude areas is generally at Zero Kilometer. Wannian Temple is the boundary of the middle and low-altitude areas. As shown roughly in the following picture. Therefore, except for urban areas, accommodation is generally also divided into these three areas. However, except for a few temples that can provide meditation room accommodation in the low-altitude area, other hotels, homestays, and hostels are no different from those in urban areas.

(4) Itinerary Arrangement

The main attractions of Mount Emei are in the high-altitude area. However, there are many temples in the low-altitude area. The scenery in the middle-altitude area is beautiful and the air is fresh, which is suitable for outdoor enthusiasts. Moreover, there are monkeys on the road from time to time. It is best not to hike up the mountain alone. Therefore, it still depends on personal choice. If you have enough time, walking for two or three days, enjoying the scenery along the way, visiting temples and finally reaching the Golden Summit is also very meaningful. Or for outdoor enthusiasts, after doing research and finding information, many people reach the Golden Summit on foot in one day. The following are common itinerary arrangements according to the length of time.
