Huashan Mountain, anciently known as “Western Mountain” and elegantly called “Taihua Mountain”, is one of theĀ Five Sacred MountainsĀ in China. It is located in Huayin City, Weinan City, Shaanxi Province, 120 kilometers east of the provincial capital Xi’an. The “Hua” in “China” originated from Huashan Mountain. Hence, Huashan Mountain has the title of “the Root of the Chinese Nation”. Huashan Mountain is a sacred place for the Quanzhen School, the mainstream of Taoism in China, and is known as the “Fourth Heavenly Cave”. It is also a deity widely worshipped by the Chinese people, namely the God of Huashan Mountain in the Western Mountain. There are a total of 72 semi-suspended caves and more than 20 Taoist temples. Among them, Yuquan Courtyard, Dulong Temple, Dongdao Courtyard, and Zhenyue Palace are listed as key national Taoist temples. There are famous Taoist masters such as Chen Tuan, Hao Datong, and He Yuanxi. Huashan Mountain is mainly composed of five peaks, namely the East Peak, West Peak, South Peak, North Peak, and Middle Peak. Among them, the South Peak is 2,154.90 meters above sea level, which is the highest main peak of Huashan Mountain and also the highest peak among the Five Sacred Mountains. The ancients respectfully called it the “Head of Huashan Mountain”. There are more than 210 famous scenic spots in Huashan Mountain, including theĀ Plank Road in the SkyĀ built in the air, the “Somersault of the Sparrow Hawk” which is surrounded by cliffs on three sides, and the “Thousand-foot Precipice”, “Hundred-foot Gorge”, and “Laojun Plowing Trench” chiseled out on the sheer cliffs. Among them, the “Immortal Palm of Huashan Mountain” is listed as the top of theĀ Eight Scenic Spots in the Guanzhong area. Moreover, Mr. Jin Yong mentioned Huashan Mountain in many martial arts novels. Even the location for the highest-level martial arts masters to debate swordsmanship was chosen on Huashan Mountain, making Huashan Mountain full of the spirit of chivalry in the martial arts world. There are many stone inscriptions and tablets engraved with “Debate on Swordsmanship on Huashan Mountain” on the mountaintop.

Distribution Positions of the Five Peaks of Huashan Mountain

The East Peak, also known as the Chaoyang Peak, is 2,096.2 meters above sea level. It is the best place to watch the sunrise. The East Peak consists of one main peak and three subsidiary peaks. The peak where the Chaoyang Terrace is located is the highest. The Yunv Peak is in the west, the Shilou Peak is in the east, and the Botai is slightly to the south. They are arranged in an orderly manner and each has its own charm. The Botai is an isolated peak. There is a stone pavilion and a stone chessboard on the top of the peak. It is said that Emperor Taizu of the Song Dynasty, Zhao Kuangyin, once played chess with Chen Tuan and lost Huashan Mountain, so it got the name of the Chess-playing Pavilion. The second dangerous path on Huashan Mountain, the “Somersault of the Sparrow Hawk”, must be passed through to reach the Chess-playing Pavilion from the East Peak, which is one of the famous dangerous passes on Huashan Mountain. The top of the East Peak of Huashan Mountain is covered with giant juniper and tall pine trees, with thick shade blocking the sun, and the environment is very quiet and secluded. There are dozens of landscapes on the East Peak. There are natural stone patterns on the cliff on the side of the East Shilou Peak, which look like a huge palm print. This is the “Immortal Palm of Huashan Mountain” listed as the top of the Eight Scenic Spots in the Guanzhong area. The story of the Giant Spirit God opening the mountain and guiding the river originated from here. To the north of the Chaoyang Terrace, there is the Yanggong Tower, which stands far away from the Yanggong Tower on the West Peak. It was built by General Yang Hucheng, and there are four characters “All Things in Order” inscribed by General Yang Hucheng on the tower.

East Peak

East Peak

The West Peak, also known as the Lianhua Peak, is the best place to watch the sunset, with an altitude of 2,082.6 meters. It is a complete huge rock, formed naturally. The precipice is thousands of feet high, as if cut by a knife or saw. Its steep, majestic, and masculine and upright posture represents the shape of Huashan Mountain. Because the huge rock on the peak top resembles the petals of a lotus flower, the ancients called it the Lianhua Peak or Furong Peak. Li Bai’s poem said, “The rock makes a lotus, and the cloud makes a platform.” Standing on the peak and looking into the distance, the surrounding mountains undulate, the clouds spread in all directions, the surrounding fields open up like a screen, and the Yellow River and Wei River wind. Standing in it, it feels like entering a fairyland, and all worldly thoughts are swept away. The stone color on the ridge of the West Peak is dark green, resembling a giant dragon, so it is called the Dragon’s Back or the Small Canglong Ridge, which is one of the famous dangerous paths on Huashan Mountain. There are numerous landscapes on the West Peak, such as the Cuiyun Palace, Lianhua Cave, Giant Spirit’s Footprint, Stone Split by an Axe, and the Cliff of Self-sacrifice, accompanied by many beautiful mythological legends. The Yanggong Tower on the peak was built by General Yang Hucheng and has his inscription.

The South Peak has three tops on one peak, with an altitude of 2,154.9 meters. It is composed of the Luoyan Peak, Songhui Peak, and Xiaozifeng. It is the highest peak of Huashan Mountain and also the highest peak among the Five Sacred Mountains. The ancients respectfully called it the “Head of Huashan Mountain”. There is also the Jintian Palace built in the Ming Dynasty on the South Peak, also known as the Baidi Temple, which enshrines the God of Huashan Mountain, Shaohao. On the highest rock, there are two big characters “Zhenyuan”. In addition, there are also Laozifeng, Alchemy Furnace, and Bagua Pool on the South Peak, and these scenic spots are all related to the legends of Laozi. On the top of the Luoyan Peak, there is the Yangtian Pool. The pool is a natural concave on the rock. The water in the pool is less than one foot deep. It doesn’t dry up in drought and doesn’t overflow in flood. It is always green, which is one of the ten mysteries of Huashan Mountain throughout the ages. On the south side of the peak, there is a thousand-foot sheer cliff, standing upright as if cut by a knife, overlooking a deep fault valley below, separated from Sanshan Mountain and Sanfeng Mountain. On the mountain road from the South Peak to the East Peak, there are also the Bizhao Cliff, Nantianmen, and the Plank Road in the Sky. The Bizhao Cliff is the cave where the famous Taoist Chen Tuan once hid to avoid the imperial edict summoning him to serve as an official.

South Peak

South Peak

The North Peak, also known as the Yuntai Peak, is 1,614.9 meters above sea level and is one of the main peaks of Huashan Mountain. Because of its location in the north, it is surrounded by cliffs on all sides, with beautiful clouds on top and connected to the earth’s veins below. It stands alone majestically, like a cloud platform, so it got its name. There is also the Zhenwu Palace, a Taoist temple, on the top of the North Peak. It is built against the mountain, with a unique design and pleasant scenery. The North Peak is an excellent position to overlook other main peaks and the Canglong Ridge. The precipice of the West Peak and the steepness of the Canglong Ridge can be seen clearly from the North Peak. After visiting the Huashan Debate on Swordsmanship Platform on the North Peak, you can follow the climbing path from bottom to top to visit scenic spots such as the Ca’er Cliff, Heavenly Ladder, Sun and Moon Cliff, Imperial Road, Canglong Ridge, Wuyun Peak, and Golden Lock Pass. There are many cliff inscriptions around the Ca’er Cliff, like a natural calligraphy barrier.
North Peak

North Peak

The Middle Peak, also known as the Yunv Peak, is 2,037.8 meters above sea level. The ancients referred to the three peaks of Huashan Mountain as the East, West, and South Peaks, and the Yunv Peak was an integral part of the East Peak. Today, people call the Yunv Peak the Middle Peak, making it also exist as an independent main peak of Huashan Mountain. The idiom “a proud son-in-law” and the eternal love story of “Playing the Flute to Attract the Phoenix” both originated from here. There is a Yunv Temple built on the peak top. There are five stone mortars in front of the temple and a stone horse beside it. Behind the Yunv Temple, there are the Piping Terrace and the Yinfeng Pavilion. There is a single pine tree on the cliff of the Middle Peak. Its roots cannot be seen. Its branches stretch out in the air, and its trunk is shiny without scales, and it is called the Self-sacrifice Tree. In his poem “Looking at the Sacred Mountain”, Du Fu in the Tang Dynasty wrote the line, “How can I get the nine-section cane of the immortal and lean on it to reach the washing plate of the Yunv.”

Xifeng Hotel

Xifeng Hotel

The Xifeng Hotel is located on the West Peak of Huashan Mountain. If the Dongfeng Hotel is fully booked, the Xifeng Hotel is also a good choice. It takes about 40 minutes to walk from the Xifeng Hotel to the Chaoyang Peak. If you want to watch the sunrise, you need to set out quite early.

After passing the “Hui Xin Shi”, you will come to the “Thousand-foot Precipice”, which is the first dangerous place on Huashan Mountain. The walls of the precipice are vertical, and only two people can pass up and down at a time. The iron chains on both sides hang vertically, and the slope is 70Ā°. There are more than 370 steps from top to bottom, and you need to climb with your hands and feet. Then comes the “Hundred-foot Gorge”, which is located north of the “Thousand-foot Precipice” and is also a dangerous pass for climbing Huashan Mountain. The two walls seem to close together, but they are propped open by two flying stones. People have to crawl under the stones, feeling very frightened. After passing through these two dangerous passes, you will reach the North Peak. Starting from the North Peak, pass through the Ca’er Cliff, Canglong Ridge, etc., and head for the Middle Peak, East Peak, South Peak, West Peak and other main peaks. The Canglong Ridge is one of the famous dangerous paths on Huashan Mountain, with more than 530 steps built. Moreover, Huashan Mountain is famous for its steepness, and night climbing can relatively reduce the sense of fear.
You can set off at around 10 p.m. and arrive at the Chaoyang Peak (East Peak) before sunrise. Remember to bring a thick coat when climbing at night. Although you may not feel cold during the climbing process, it will be very cold on the mountaintop before sunrise. After watching the sunrise on the Chaoyang Peak, you can play around at the “Somersault of the Sparrow Hawk” and then head for the South Peak to experience the “Plank Road in the Sky”. Standing on the top of Huashan Mountain and overlooking the majestic Qinling Mountains, you will have a feeling of being able to swallow mountains and rivers. Then go from the South Peak to the West Peak and appreciate the steepness of Huashan Mountain among the sheer cliffs. If you are exhausted, you can take the West Peak cableway to go down the mountain. If you still have energy, you can go down from the West Peak (you can choose whether to go to the Middle Peak or not. There is a temple on the top of the mountain, and there is a big rock in front of the temple). Then pass through the Golden Lock Pass and Canglong Ridge to reach the North Peak, reproducing the scenes of the martial arts masters debating swordsmanship on Huashan Mountain, the traces of chivalrous couples, the heroic deeds in “Swordsman” and the glints and flashes of swords and spears in those years. If you still have good physical strength at this time, you can choose to return along the ancient path of Huashan Mountain or take the North Peak cableway to go down the mountain.
